Violence surrounds Intifada anniversary demonstrationsProtests mark two years since uprising began
JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Palestinian youths threw rocks at Israeli tanks in Gaza on Saturday in demonstrations marking the second anniversary of the most recent wave of Israeli-Palestinian fighting. A 19-year-old Palestinian was shot and killed shortly before noon by Israeli forces in Netzarim, a Jewish settlement in northern Gaza, Palestinian sources in Gaza said. Israeli military sources, however, said Israeli soldiers were not using live ammunition in monitoring the demonstrations and had only shot someone in the leg with a rubber-coated steel bullet. Although Israel Defense Forces had no reports of any deaths, it did confirm clashes between its forces and Palestinians across Gaza, including Netzarim. In a separate incident hours earlier, a Palestinian was shot and killed by Israeli forces in the southern part of Gaza, according to the Palestine Red Crescent Society. The 25-year-old man was shot in the chest by an Israeli tank in Rafah around 3 a.m., Red Crescent said. The IDF said it is checking that report. Saturday marks two years since then-Israeli opposition leader Ariel Sharon led a delegation to Temple Mount, called Noble Sanctuary by Muslims -- a Jerusalem site that both Jews and Muslims consider sacred. Crowds of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank began attacking Israeli security forces after Sharon's visit. The violence has continued since then on both sides.
