JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Two Palestinians were killed Thursday when an Israeli helicopter fired missiles, striking a car in Gaza City, hospital officials said.

Palestinian sources said both were members of the radical Islamic group Hamas and one was believed to be a senior leader.

The sources said at least 40 people were wounded, six of them seriously. At least 15 of the wounded were children.

Israel Radio said that Mohammed Deif, the Hamas chief planner and master bombmaker, was a target of the attack, but Hamas said he was not harmed.

Israeli forces killed a top Hamas activist earlier Thursday in the West Bank during a firefight that also claimed the life of an Israeli officer, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

The fighting took place in A-Labad, a village near Tulkarem where the IDF said its forces had been searching for senior Hamas activist Nashed Talateen.

Palestinian sources confirmed that a Palestinian and Israeli soldier were killed in the firefight.

Talateen shot the Israeli officer, and Israeli forces returned fire, killing the Hamas activist, the IDF said. The officer later died of his wounds at a hospital, the IDF said.

Talateen was from A-Labad and actively recruited suicide bombers, according to Israeli military sources.

Izzedine al Qassam, the military wing of Hamas, distributed a leaflet confirming Talateen was killed in an exchange of fire with Israeli forces in A-Labad, Israeli military sources said. The leaflet also said Talateen was a senior member of the Izzedine al Qassam Brigades.

The U.S. State Department has labeled Hamas, a Palestinian Islamic fundamentalist group, a terrorist organization. Izzedine al Qassam has admitted responsibility for terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians as well as attacks against the Israeli military.

On Thursday evening, four Israelis, including a baby, were wounded when Palestinians fired at an Israeli car on the road between east Hebron and the village of Yatta in the West Bank, Israeli sources said.

The baby was said to have suffered serious wounds. The other three sustained light injuries.

A 1-year-old Palestinian boy died Thursday morning in the West Bank city of Hebron from tear gas thrown by Israeli forces, according to the Palestine Red Crescent Society and Palestinian government officials.

Israeli military sources said soldiers fired two tear gas canisters toward a crowd that defied the curfew in the Palestinian area. The sources said there was a high alert for possible attacks in the area. The IDF said it is continuing to check what happened.

In Gaza, Israeli soldiers shot and killed an armed Palestinian near Elei Sinai after he and other Palestinians tried to infiltrate the settlement, according to Israeli military sources.

Palestinian medical sources confirmed that one Palestinian was killed and reported another was injured near Elei Sinai.

Israeli military sources said troops found a Kalashnikov rifle, hand grenades and ammunition on the Palestinian's body.

The IDF continued to carry out searches in the area, the sources said.

Also, a Palestinian died in the West Bank city of Jenin when Israeli forces stormed his house, according to Palestinian sources.
