Deadly attack at Kashmir temple

From CNN's Suhasini Haidar

NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- An explosion has rocked a Hindu temple in India's Jammu and Kashmir state during an attack by two suspected Islamic militants that left at least 10 people dead.

More than 19 others were injured after one of the attackers hurled a grenade outside the popular Ragunath temple on Saturday, located in a busy marketplace in Jammu, the state's capital.

The attackers then exchanged gunfire with security personnel nearby and in the temple.

Four security troops and four civilians -- including one woman -- were killed in the blast and crossfire.

The two militants were also killed during the gunbattle.

Police have cordoned off the area and are searching for any other militants that may have been involved in the attack.

They say investigations are continuing and that it is unclear whether the temple or the security personnel stationed there were the target of the attack.

More than a dozen Islamic groups have been fighting for Kashmir's independence from India since militant insurgency began in 1989.

Authorities say that around 30,000 people have been killed during the campaign in the Muslim majority state.

India accuses Islamabad of arming and training Pakistan-based militant groups but Pakistan denies the charges, instead saying it only provides moral and diplomatic support for Kashmiri separatists.
