ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- President Bush and Hillary Rodham Clinton may have little in common politically, but they're both considered the most-admired people by American respondents to a poll.

As usual, in a poll conducted by CNN, USA Today and Gallup, those asked chose the sitting president as the man they admire most. But President Bush has an unusually large lead over other admired men.

• Bush was the first answer for 28 percent of respondents.

• Second on the list is former President Jimmy Carter, who won the Nobel Peace Prize earlier this year. He was named by 9 percent of respondents.

• Rounding out the list of men are Secretary of State Colin Powell, 4 percent; Pope John Paul II, 3 percent; and former President Bill Clinton, 3 percent.

Admired women

The survey also asked respondents which woman they most admire.

• Former first lady and current New York Sen. Clinton was named by 7 percent of those responding.

• Mrs. Clinton bested current first lady Laura Bush by one percentage point.

• Also on the list are talk-show host and businesswoman Oprah Winfrey, 6 percent; former first lady Barbara Bush, 3 percent; and former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, 3 percent.

Gallup has asked the same open-ended question for more than 50 years to gauge who is most-admired among those surveyed. This year, 1,009 adult Americans were asked and filled in the blank with anyone they wished.

There are some interesting choices when the names are broken down demographically.

President Bush tops the list among Republicans, as expected, but also tops the list among Democrats.

Among male respondents, Mrs. Clinton is the most admired woman. But most female respondents chose Winfrey.

In fifth place among women is actress and pop singer Jennifer Lopez. Among Americans 18 to 30 years old, Lopez tops the list.
