Texas bridge collapse kills toddler
RICHLAND, Texas (CNN) -- A driver whose truck slammed into a highway overpass, causing the bridge to collapse, was rescued Sunday, but his toddler son, riding in the cab, was killed, officials said. Crews worked all afternoon to dig through the rubble caused by the accident and free the man, identified as Cleaster Broadway of Moro, Arkansas. He was taken to Hillcrest Medical Center in Waco, where he was in stable condition Sunday night, said Lt. Gary Myles of the Texas Department of Public Safety. Broadway's 19-month-old son was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident happened at about 9:15 a.m. (10:15 a.m. ET) when Broadway's truck, going northbound on Interstate 45, veered toward the southbound lanes and hit a concrete support column for the Highway 14 overpass, said Highway Patrol spokesman Charlie Morgan. The bridge crosses over southbound lanes of the interstate, about 60 miles south of Dallas, Morgan said. Half the truck was buried beneath the rubble. Myles said it would probably be some time before the truck could be removed and the scene cleared. "That will probably be late tonight or sometime tomorrow before they'll be able to do that," Myles said. Morgan said it could be months before the bridge is rebuilt. The cause of the accident is being investigated, but Morgan said no other vehicles were involved. |
