Mexican soldier shoots U.S. resident at border

HIDALGO, Texas (CNN) -- A Mexican soldier on Thursday shot and wounded a Mexican who lives in the United States on the Hidalgo International Bridge connecting Texas with Mexico, an immigration official said.

About 9:20 a.m., the Mexican military on the bridge tried to pull over a car carrying two Mexican citizens who are U.S. residents, U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service spokesman Liboria Flores said. The two tried to escape and the Mexican soldiers opened fire.

The passenger in the car was wounded in the arm, Flores said, and taken to the hospital for treatment. About eight other vehicles were damaged.

Flores did not know what had prompted the Mexican authorities to try to stop the car.

The bridge was closed for about 35 minutes after the incident, Flores said.
