Former NBA star Rodman arrested
NEWPORT BEACH, California (CNN) -- Former NBA player Dennis Rodman was arrested by Newport Beach police officers early Saturday for obstructing and delaying a police investigation of a possible business code violation.
According to Sgt. Steve Shulman of the Newport Beach Police, Rodman was taken into custody at approximately 3:15 a.m. PST (6:15 a.m. EST) after preventing officers from entering a restaurant and bar.
Police decided to investigate the establishment at 2:40 a.m. after observing numerous cars in the parking lot and seeing several people inside the building, according to Shulman. California state law restricts bars and restaurants from serving alcohol after 2 a.m.
The officers made contact with Rodman through the door and say he refused to open it. After approximately 35 minutes, the people inside exited and Rodman was transported to the Newport Beach jail. He was then booked at the Orange County jail in Santa Ana, where he was later released.
The case will be submitted to the Orange County District Attorney's Office for review, according to police.
Rodman's arrest marks the latest in a series of brushes with Orange County law enforcement officials. Last October, he admitted guilt to misdemeanor noise violation charges stemming from his 40th birthday party several months earlier at his beach home. In December 1999, he was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in Costa Mesa, a charge to which Rodman later plead guilty.
