Oasis look back to glory days
LONDON, England -- Britpop standard bearers of the 1990s Oasis are releasing their first single for nearly two years. The track, The Hindu Times, is taken from their forthcoming album "Heathen Chemistry," which is out in July. The single's release will be a test of whether the band has managed to retain its fan-base. Their last album, Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants, was poorly received and their last single, Sunday Morning Call, peaked at number four in July 2000. However, the band appears to be as popular as ever if recent ticket sales for their summer gigs -- their first outdoor UK shows for two years -- are anything to go by. The first two concerts on July 5 and 6 at London's Finsbury Park sold out within two hours and extra dates had to be added to meet demand. Since they first found fame at the height of the Britpop explosion, brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher have been in the headlines almost as much for their rows and tangled love lives as for their music. In recent weeks Liam appeared to have returned to his old ways when he was pictured in a scuffle with doormen outside London's Met Bar. Cynics believe it is no coincidence that the publicity came ahead of the release of the new single. Oasis gained a massive fan base with their first two albums "Definitely Maybe" (1994) and "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" (1995). Both albums scored UK number ones. Their success reached a high in 1996 when their show at Knebworth in north London was one of Britain's biggest-ever outdoor concerts. But their 1997 offering "Be Here Now" received harsh reviews and the band appeared to be losing its top of the pops status as interest in Britpop declined during the late 1990s. But the reviews of their last album "Standing on the Shoulder of Giants" (2000) were better than the previous album as Rolling Stone magazine called it easily their boldest work. Oasis played a charity concert at London's Royal Albert Hall in February and are reported to be performing at the Coachella Festival in California at the end of April. |
