Winona Ryder: 'Mr. Deeds'
InStyle (InStyle) -- What tabloid TV producer Babe Bennett (Winona Ryder) wants most in life is to make it to the broadcasting big leagues. So when a media-frenzying, rags-to-riches story comes along, she doesn't miss a beat. Her assignment: to get the inside scoop on small-town pizzeria owner turned corporate billionaire Longfellow Deeds (Adam Sandler). "She's a girl that's trying to get a story," says hairstylist Thomas Real. "And she'll do anything to get it." Even if that means concealing her identity and trading in her trendy New York City togs and tresses for a softer style that's less intimidating. "She's trying to be sweet and innocent even though she's really this fast-talking business woman," says makeup artist Kathrine James. "60 Minutes," here she comes. HairAs part of her plan to win over Mr. Deeds, Babe abandons her sleek brunet locks for blonder big-wave curls. To damp tresses Real applied Big Sexy Hair Root Pump Volumizing Spray Mousse and Curly Sexy Hair Curl Power Curl Enhancer, on ends for thickness, before blow-drying with a large-barrel round brush. After spritzing on Curly Sexy Hair Hot Curl Setting Lotion, a heat-activated protector, Real used a curling iron in alternating directions, separating curls with his fingers. He applied John Frieda Sheer Blonde Spun Gold balm to "fine-tune" ends and finished with Big Sexy Hair Spray and Play hairspray, "just enough to set and leave it alone." Eyes
To contrast Babe's stronger color palette at the start of the film, James swept MAC eye shadow in Brulé over lids for a soft, neutral wash. "The nude color gives her eyes a real brightness," she says. Chanel Precision Eye Definer in black, softly smudged on top lash line and outer bottom lashes, defined her big, brown eyes. He enhanced her curled lashes with Christian Dior Mascara Parfait in Black Onyx and used the medium tone from Chanel Perfect Brows to touch up and fill in brows. FaceFor a bright, fresh-faced look, James prepped Ryder's skin with Shiseido Skincare Day Protective moisturizer followed by a base of Clinique Superfit Makeup in Petal. "It gives the skin a beautiful glow," says James. "You can still see the skin through it." She dusted her entire face with La Mer pressed powder in Oyster Shell. MAC blush in Rose Quartz, brushed on apples of the cheeks, gave her a healthy "cheerleader glow." LipsJames applied Cover Girl Lipslicks lip gloss in Daring (a transparent red gloss) to Ryder's bare lips. "It leaves lips nice and shiny without being too shiny," she says.
