MADISON, Wisconsin (CNN) -- Democratic state Attorney General Jim Doyle defeated acting Gov. Scott McCallum to win state's governorship Tuesday, CNN projected.

Doyle has been the state's attorney general since 1990. He became the Democrat's gubernatorial nominee after defeating Rep. Tom Barrett and Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk in a September primary.

McCallum rose from lieutenant governor to governor in 2001 after President Bush appointed then-Gov. Tommy Thompson, a Republican, to be secretary of Health and Human Services. McCallum is no stranger to close elections, having won his first campaign, for a state Senate seat, by 32 votes in 1976. He was Wisconsin's GOP nominee for the U.S. Senate in 1982, losing to incumbent Sen. William Proxmire, a Democrat.
