Matheson wins in Utah
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (CNN) -- Democratic Rep. Jim Matheson defeated State Rep. John Swallow on Tuesday in Utah's 2nd District, CNN projected.
Matheson was forced to run in a dramatically different district after Republicans redrew Matheson's district from within the relative security of Democrat-friendly Salt Lake City and spread it across most of the state's rural reaches, including more than 200,000 new Republican voters.
Swallow narrowly won a GOP primary and polls showed Matheson remaining a slight favorite going into the election. Matheson also won support recently from an unlikely source -- Eric and Dane Leavitt, the brothers of sitting Gov. Mike Leavitt, a Republican.
