Sununu wins N.H. Senate race
CONCORD, New Hampshire (CNN) -- Rep. John Sununu, Jr. defeated Gov. Jeanne Shaheen Tuesday in a close and volatile Senate race, CNN projected.
The seat is currently held by Sen. Bob Smith, whom Sununu defeated in the September 10 primary, making Smith the first incumbent senator to lose renomination in a decade.
Republicans preferred Sununu because he posed a more serious threat to Shaheen and because he alienated many GOP voters when he left the party to launch an aborted independent bid for president in 1999.
Sununu came out of the primary swinging, calling Shaheen a "liberal Democrat" and focusing on her record on taxes, given New Hampshire's reputation for disliking taxes. "She's now part of a Democratic tax ticket. New Hampshire deserves better," he told supporters on primary night.
The state's first female governor, Shaheen ran on her record, touting her action on issues like education, fiscal responsibility, and the environment.
