Russell Means wants name on New Mexico ballotWASHINGTON (CNN) -- Campaign news from around the country, compiled by CNN Political Unit staff and written by Rob Harber. Native American activist Russell Means has filed suit to get his name on the ballot as a third-party candidate for New Mexico governor. Means argues his 1975 felony conviction for his role in a courthouse riot should not disqualify him from public office. Means took part in 1969 occupation of Alcatraz Island by Activists with the "American Indian Movement." Figure skater and Maryland resident Dorothy Hamill plans to attend a fundraiser Thursday night for GOP gubernatorial candidate Bob Ehrlich. Hamill and White House Political Director Ken Mehlman are attending the event for Ehrlich at a private home in Potomac, a D.C. suburb. The invitation only gathering costs a $1,000 per person. In California, Gov. Gray Davis has unleashed his fourth attack ad against Republican Bill Simon. The ad criticizes Simon's management of a family charity and cites a newspaper report that Simon's private investment firm charged high commissions to manage the assets of the family foundation. In response to the Davis ad, Simon released a statement which reads in part: "It's ironic Gray Davis is using the $50 million he has raised from special interests to attack the $50 million my family has given to worthy causes." |
