Senator wants 9-11 fund to cover 1994 shooting .

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Just a week after a Senate agreement to expand the September 11 Victims Compensation Fund to cover previous terrorist attacks, Sen. Charles Schumer said Wednesday he wants it expanded further to include a 1994 shooting on the Brooklyn Bridge.

Last week, Schumer announced the Senate agreement on a bill to add money to the September 11 fund to compensate the families of victims of the bombings at the World Trade Center in 1993, in Oklahoma City in 1995, and at the embassies in Africa in 1998, as well as families of victims of last fall's anthrax attacks.

Schumer, D-New York, said Wednesday he also plans to include the 1994 Brooklyn Bridge slaying in the bill, to be proposed next week. The Justice Department in 2000 labeled that crime as terrorism.

In that shooting, Rashid Baz fired an automatic weapon on a van full of 16 Hasidic yeshiva students returning home from a prayer vigil for the late Grand Rebbe Menachem Schneerson. Ari Halberstam was killed.

Baz, who is serving a 141-year sentence, said the shooting was retaliation for the slaying of 29 Muslims in Israel by Jewish militant Baruch Goldstein earlier in 1994.
