Research the Taliban, bin Laden

September 20, 2001
Web posted at: 4:52 PM EDT (2052 GMT)

Overview: Who are the Taliban? Who is Osama bin Laden? Have students conduct further research about the influences of the Taliban and Osama bin Laden to create a resource guide of current information for your school's library.

Curriculum Connections: Current Events, World History

After students read the CNNfyi.com story, "Backgrounder -- Information on Afghanistan, Pakistan, bin Laden," ask the following questions:

1. Who are the Taliban? Where do they rule and when did they come to power? Who is Osama bin Laden? What is the U.S. government planning to do if the Taliban refuse to turn over Osama bin Laden? What is your opinion of this plan? What do you think will happen?

2. Divide your class into four groups. Instruct each group to conduct research to prepare a brief report that address one of the following questions:

  • When and under what circumstances did the international community first become aware of the Taliban? Which nations recognize the Taliban as the government of Afghanistan? Why has the Taliban yet to achieve international recognition?
  • Who is Osama bin Laden? What is the history between bin Laden and the Taliban?
  • What makes the U.S. suspect bin Laden?
  • What is the Northern Alliance?
  • What is the role of Pakistan in this crisis? Why has Pakistan decided to cooperate with the U.S.? What are the implications of this decision?
  • What is happening in Afghanistan? How are Afghanis preparing for a possible attack?

3. After students share their reports, help them compile their findings and create a resource guide for your school's library. As this crisis unfolds, encourage students to update the resource guide and contribute additional in-depth materials on related topics.
