More violence in Gaza and West Bank
KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza (CNN) -- Palestinian sources reported one person was injured late Saturday when Israel fired two missiles at a Palestinian national guard post near the Khan Younis Palestinian refugee camp in southern Gaza. The Israel Defense Forces confirmed the attack. "This attack came after many requests to the Palestinian security forces to stop the firing of the mortar bombs in Israeli settlement areas," it said. Earlier in the evening, the IDF reported the Palestinians launched seven mortar bombs at Gush Katif, an Israeli settlement in Gaza. The IDF reported 10 mortar bombs fired toward Israeli settlements in Gaza over the weekend.
Earlier in the day, one Palestinian was killed and seven others injured in an exchange of gunfire between the Israeli army and Palestinian militants in the refugee camp, Palestinian officials said. The officials said Abdo Abu Bakra, 29, died from a gunshot wound to the head.
The Israeli army confirmed it initiated activity in Palestinian-controlled territory. Army officials said there had been several instances of shooting coming from the territory aimed at an Israeli settlement. The army said its forces entered the area and "identified a squad of armed terrorists on their way to carry out an attack." "The army force opened fire at the people and saw that several of them had been hit," an army statement said.
Palestinian sources said Israeli tanks entered the Palestinian-controlled territory. The Israeli army denied the description but declined comment on the vehicles involved. In another incident, Palestinian sources said Israeli forces shot a Hamas militant as he was standing near his house in the northern West Bank town of Jenin. Ahmad Bsharat managed to escape, the sources said, and was recovering in the hospital. The sources called it an "attempted assassination" by Israel. The Israeli army said it had no comment on the incident. Palestinian hospital sources said Bsharat was shot in his hand and leg and was in moderate condition. On Saturday evening a 7-month-old Palestinian baby boy was shot three times in the abdomen as he was traveling in a car on a West Bank road near Nablus. The Israeli army said it was checking the report. ![]() |
