JERUSALEM (CNN) -- An activist in the Islamic fundamentalist group Hamas -- described as a "senior terrorist" by the Israel Defense Forces -- was killed Wednesday when his car exploded in the West Bank village of Tuffah near Nablus.

Palestinian security officials said four missiles were fired at the car of Salah Darwazi by an Israeli Apache attack helicopter.

Israeli sources said Darwazi's vehicle was destroyed by anti-tank missiles, not missiles from a helicopter.

An IDF spokesman confirmed the attack on Darwazi, 37, calling him a "senior terrorist" in the Hamas organization "who was lately the center element in planning and coordinating terrorist attacks in Nablus." The statement said Darwazi was "also planning a very big terrorist attack against Israeli civilians inside the green line," inside the borders of Israel.

The IDF said Darwazi had been involved in a long string of terrorist acts against Israel. The IDF accused Darwazi of being actively involved in two bombings in the Israeli coastal city of Netanya.

In one of those attacks, five Israelis were killed by a suicide bomber.

While both Israel and the Palestinian Authority say they are honoring a month-old cease-fire agreement brokered by the United States, Israel has said it will carry out an "active defense" including pinpoint strikes against targets it identifies as terrorists.

The Palestinian Authority calls such attacks "assassinations."

The United States and the European Union have condemned what they call "targeted killings" by Israeli forces.
