RAHAB, Jordan (CNN) -- Archaeologists in the northwest Jordanian town of Rahab have uncovered what may be the oldest Christian church in the world.

The church is believed to have been built during the second century A.D. when the Romans extended their empire throughout the Middle East.

Archaeologist Abdul Qader Al-Hussan, head of the Rahab project, says the distinctly Roman mosaic inscriptions on the church floor are enough evidence to validate the discovery.

It is hoped the discovery will bring more tourism to Jordan.
