PARIS, France -- Carlos the Jackal, once the world's most wanted man, plans to marry his French lawyer.

The Venezuelan, whose real name is Illich Ramirez Sanchez, 51, is currently serving a life sentence for a triple murder in 1975.

His lawyer, Isabelle Coutant-Peyre, said the couple hoped to marry in Le Sante prison in Paris. The couple are waiting for annulment of their existing marriages.

Coutant-Peyre told Reuters: "There is a huge difference between the image presented of him and the reality -- he's much more conformist than I am."

"It's a marriage of love and of compatibility of ideas," Coutant-Peyre told The Associated Press.

Ramirez is being held in solitary confinement.

He was involved in an assault during an OPEC meeting in Vienna 1975. The drama resulted in 70 hostages being taken, amongst them 11 oil ministers.

He remains under investigation for attacks committed in France in the 1970s. He was captured in Sudan in 1994 and brought to France in a sack. Ramirez converted to Islam and married a Muslim woman while living in Sudan in the early 1990s. In the 1980s, he married German Magdalena Kopp.

Coutant-Peyre told AP divorce proceedings had been started on both sides in July.
