19 treated after Italian tunnel fire

TURIN, Italy -- Nineteen people were treated for smoke inhalation after a truck caught fire in an Italian tunnel, police said.

About 30 people were in the Prapuntin tunnel on the Turin-Bardonecchia road when a Romanian truck loaded with beets caught fire, said police official Ezio Aime.

The driver was among those in hospital. None of the victims were in a serious condition.

Aime said the truck had a mechanical problem and the fire brought traffic in the four kilometre (two-and-a-half-mile) tunnel to a halt.

It lies 50-kilometres (30 miles) west of Turin and 20 miles (13 miles) from the French border.
