Truck leads police on fiery chase
DALLAS, Texas (CNN) -- Police Wednesday chased a stolen 18-wheeler loaded with lumber that caught fire and spilled into streets as the vehicle careened across highway medians and sped through interchanges. The chase lasted for more than 90 minutes and ended when the truck came to a halt, the driver emerged and SWAT team members moved in and took the man into custody. At one point during the chase, lumber dangling from the truck barely missed a school bus. Another time, a police officer approached the tractor-trailer as it slowed and apparently fired a shot.
Police said the chase began after an aggravated assault at a lumber yard around 1:20 p.m. (2:20 p.m. EST). Soon, the tractor-trailer looked like a moving fireball, with flames and smoke pouring from the back of the trailer, its cargo ablaze. A flaming rear tire rolled from the truck, missing vehicles on an access road. Witnesses said the driver honked and waved to crowds of people who stopped at interchanges to watch the spectacle. |
