Security tightened at Calif. bridges after threat

SACRAMENTO, California (CNN) -- Gov. Gray Davis said Thursday the state is beefing up protection of its suspension bridges after receiving a threat to destroy one of them.

"We believe there is a credible threat that there will be an effort made between November 2 and November 7 to destroy one of those bridges," Davis told reporters.

Well before the threat was received, though, "we had taken elaborate security measures" with highway patrol, the Coast Guard and other officials, he said.

Since the threat was received, security has been tightened "even more," he said.

Davis said he also authorized the National Guard to assign personnel to protect California's bridges.
