Restrictions lifted on haz-mat rail shipmentsWASHINGTON (CNN) -- The nation's freight railroads resumed shipments of hazardous materials and other sensitive cargoes under heightened security Wednesday, ending a three-day suspension imposed following the start of U.S. bombardment of targets in Afghanistan.
The announcement was made by the Association of American Railroads. Sources who reported the suspension declined to specify what materials were involved or the potential effect of the restrictions. The new security measures include: -- More patrols, inspections and surveillance to ensure the security of shipments and facilities. The patrols will be conducted by each railroad's own police force. -- The modification of operations for certain trains, depending on what they are carrying. -- A command center staffed 24 hours a day by the Association of American Railroads that will be linked to federal security personnel. Individual railroads will also staff their own 24-hour operations centers. |
