Muhammad Ali, former heavyweight boxing champion: I didn't think it was something that happened in real life. I thought it was a movie. I couldn't understand how people could take a plane and run it into a building.

George W. Bush, U.S. president: I can hear you. The rest of the world hears you. And the people who knocked down these buildings will hear all of us soon.

Jacques Chirac, French president: I want to tell you that all the French population support you and supports the Americans for all you have done. We say thank you because everybody in the world is concerned by terrorist attacks. All what you have done, was done for New York of course, for your people, for all the people that are dead, but also for all the free world. And for that also we have to thank you very, very much.

Tom Daschle, U.S. Senate majority leader: It is one thing to see on TV, to hear about it on the radio, and watch it as we have from day to day. It's another thing altogether to be here, to experience the loss.

Joschka Fischer, German Foreign Minister: We are deeply shocked. It is very sad. It's very impressive to see the people here -- the employees of the city of New York, volunteers, families -- really cooperate. I think that this is a very strong signal that this was a murderous attack; it was sheer mass murder what happened here last Tuesday.

Trent Lott, U.S. Senate minority leader: So many of us here have had to deal with disasters. But I must say, I've never seen anything comparable to what we have seen here today, the magnitude of it, the horror of it.

Ehud Olmert, mayor of Jerusalem: We have experienced a similar phenomenon every time there is a big explosion, suicidal attack in the center of town, in the heart of Jerusalem. We then have this phenomenon of people staying at home, mourning. The first request we have from them is go out, go to stores, keep the normal way of life. One of the things terrorists are trying to achieve is to stop us from living our way of life and we have to do the opposite. We have to carry on, and that's what we're trying to do.
