Suspect hunted in Simi Valley shootings
SIMI VALLEY, California (CNN) -- A suspect in the shooting of five people -- three of whom died, including two children -- remained at large Thursday. "We have some ideas about where he may be, and we're looking," said Sgt. Robert Brill about suspect Reynaldo Herrera Rodriguez, who police described as armed and dangerous. Police said Rodriguez, 35, was a former boyfriend of one of the family members who was not home at the time. Brill said police believe they have a motive, but he declined to elaborate. Police gave the following account of Wednesday's incident: Rodriguez entered the open garage of the home Wednesday afternoon and began firing a handgun. He wounded Rigo Calderon, 16, who was later treated and released for a gunshot wound to his right thigh. The suspect then entered the home "and fired at all occupants he encountered," according to a police report. Killed were Espiranza Martinez, 80, and two children: Ricardo Calderon, 12, and Shanatl Rios, 4 1/2. Lucia Vargas, 19, suffered two gunshots wounds, one to her abdomen and one to her left hand. She remained hospitalized at Simi Valley Hospital. Rafael Calderon Jr., 18, suffered a sprained ankle when he jumped out a second-story bathroom window to seek help. All of the wounded and injured were related, but police did not know the exact nature of the relationships. Lt. Rex Jones described the scene inside the home as "devastating." Aerial video of the scene showed a blood-spattered driveway with yellow crime scene tape surrounding the yard and house. Neighbors described the family as a friendly one and said they were horrified to learn of the shootings "You have kids involved," Jones said. Police searched the suspect's home late Wednesday in the nearby city of Thousand Oaks, but he was not there. Police said he may have intentionally set fire to his home earlier in the afternoon. Rodriguez was last seen driving a rented dark blue 2002 Ford Explorer. |
