Inmates captured after New Mexico jail breakSOCORRO, New Mexico (CNN) -- Police captured two remaining escaped inmates early Thursday after two guards were overpowered and beaten in a jailbreak. Four inmates escaped from the Socorro County Detention Center around 6:15 p.m. (8:15 p.m. EDT) Wednesday.
Three inmates launched the escape by attacking and beating two guards who were taking them from their cells for their evening meal. "They jumped the guards and choked one until she passed out," said detention center administrator Dorothy Apodaca. "They beat the other guard and locked them in a cell." Jailhouse video recorders caught the dramatic scene as it unfolded, showing one of the inmates grabbing the female guard and choking her. She was able to use a phone and call for help during the attack, Apodaca said. After locking up the guards, the three men made their way into the women's side of the jail and freed a female inmate. Two of the men were caught about a half hour after the escape. The woman and the third man remained at large for a time, but were apprehended overnight, a sheriff's deputy said. She had no further details. Apodaca said the two guards were treated and released from a nearby hospital. |
