California fire closes section of I-80, town evacuated

TRUCKEE, California (CNN) -- A 1,200-acre forest fire led authorities to shut Interstate 80 Sunday afternoon and forced the evacuation of dozens of people from their homes in a community about 10 miles west of Truckee.

A six-mile stretch of I-80 was closed crom Hirshdale, California to Stateline, Nevada at 2 p.m. (5 p.m. EDT), said Sylvia McKinney, a dispatcher with the California Highway Patrol in Truckee.

Traffic was being diverted along side roads, she said.

The town of Floriston's two dozen residents were evacuated, said Joe Sutter, a dispatcher for the Nevada County Sheriff in Truckee.

Evacuees were being sent to Reno, about 12 miles east.

The fire began Sunday just east of Truckee and was spreading eastward along I-80 toward Floriston, she said.
