KUWAIT CITY (CNN) -- A U.S. warplane on a training exercise accidentally dropped a bomb on a group of people Monday in Kuwait, killing four Americans and a New Zealander, the Pentagon said.

A U.S. Navy F-18 fighter jet dropped the bomb during an exercise involving U.S., Kuwaiti and British jets at a bombing range in northwest Kuwait, the Pentagon said. Those killed were acting as military observers.

The jet was flying from the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman at the time of the incident.
