Past and present with CNN founder Ted Turner
(CNN) -- CNN founder Ted Turner has eked out phenomenal success practically from scratch -- he began his career as an account executive with his father's Turner Advertising Company, selling roadside billboards.
A millionaire by 25, Turner took over his dad's company in 1963, won the 1977 America's Cup yacht race and was named Time Man of the Year in 1991.
Now, the man once known as "Captain Outrageous" and "The Mouth of the South" is vice chairman and senior adviser of CNN's newly formed parent company, AOL Time Warner.
Along the way, the broadcast guru amassed a wealth he's been quoted as saying is "overrated." But he's used that wealth not only to make his mark in media but to affect change in the world as well.
