| Preview: Triple Play 2002
(IDG) -- Spring's not too far off, and that means spring training -- and the first of the 2002 sports games -- is kicking into gear. Triple Play 2002, the perennial bestseller on the PlayStation, is leading the charge with a new, retooled PS2 edition to complement the PlayStation version. Perhaps feeling the heat from All-Star Baseball 2002, the biggest new element in TP is a new pitcher/batter interface that utilizes cursors. The strike zone will be visible on screen, and you'll use the joystick to position the pitching cursor. On the batting side, EA Sports reports that an oversized, transparent cursor will mean that gamers won't have to swerve the cursor around the strike zone, and the altitude and direction of the hit will be controlled by the cursor placement. For all those cursor-haters out there, no word yet on whether TP's traditional interface will also be available -- pray for it as an option! Feel the heat, meat
On the fielding side, semi-auto fielder control will mean that the player goes about making the best play on his own until the gamer takes charge. EA Sports will also use the PS2's analog buttons to determine how hard the fielder hurls the ball. Visually, TP's player animations will reflect the urgency of the play, and the players themselves will be composed of 4000+ polygons. On the sound side, Buck Martinez returns to handle the color commentary, but a new play-by-play announcer -- Sean McDonough -- will report to the broadcast booth. As for modes and teams, naturally you can expect all the MLB teams and players in season or exhibition action. All told, these early screenshots look promising -- the only question is whether those loyal TP fans will go for that new pitcher/batter interface. Stay tuned for the scouting report in our upcoming hands-on preview.
