'West Wing' creator arrested in 'illicit mushroom' findBURBANK, California -- Aaron Sorkin, creator of the Emmy-winning drama "The West Wing," was arrested Sunday in Burbank, California, for investigation of drug possession, authorities said Monday. Sorkin was arrested Sunday at Burbank Airport when a search allegedly found "illicit mushrooms" in a carry-on suitcase, airport spokesman Victor Gill told The Associated Press. Sorkin was preparing to catch a flight when his bag was searched at a checkpoint. Details on the type of mushrooms were unavailable. Hallucinogenic mushrooms are a controlled substance in California. Authorities said a suspicious bag, inside Sorkin's carry-on luggage, contained the mushrooms. "The screening point personnel called the airport police who responded and conducted their investigation," said Sgt. Tom Davenport with the Burbank Airport Police. Sorkin was then taken to Burbank city jail, booked and released three hours later on $10,000 bond. The producer and writer has admitted past problems with substance abuse, and has incorporated abuse issues into his shows. One character on "The West Wing," the chief of staff portrayed by John Spencer, is a recovering alcoholic. Sorkin is also the creator of the television show "Sports Night" and the screenwriter of the movies "A Few Good Men" and "The American President." "A Few Good Men" was based on Sorkin's play of the same name, which first catapulted him to success. RELATED STORIES:
