Bowie mourns motherLONDON, England -- Pop idol David Bowie is mourning the death of his mother. Peggy Jones, who was in her late eighties, is understood to have died at a nursing home in St Albans, Hertfordshire, England, where she lived. It is believed she died on Monday and Bowie was told the news in the U.S. where he lives. Bowie's spokesman Alan Edwards told the Press Association: "I can confirm it is sadly true. It's just come out of the blue." The singer, whose hits include "Life On Mars," "Changes," "Fame" and "Let's Dance," lost touch with his mother -- who suffered from senile dementia -- after he found fame in the early seventies. However he resumed contact with her after he married his second wife, model and actress Iman, in 1992. Bowie was born David Robert Jones in January 1947 in Brixton, south London. Peggy married his father John, a promotions officer at Dr Barnardo's, eight months later. His father died in 1969 from pneumonia, shortly before "Space Oddity" became a hit. Bowie's legendary reputation for change his image -- from Ziggy Stardust, to Aladdin Sane to the Thin White Duke -- was first spotted by his mother when he was just three years old. She once told how she found the youngster covered in make-up after leaving him alone near her cosmetics for half an hour. "When I found him he looked for all the world like a clown," she said in an interview in 1985. "I told him that he shouldn't use make-up, but he said 'You do mummy.' I agreed but pointed out that it wasn't for little boys." RELATED STORIES:
