Love on the rocks for Winslet

LONDON, England -- British actress Kate Winslet has split from her film director husband Jim Threapleton after less than three years of marriage.

"This is an absolutely amicable separation and it is a mutual decision between both of us," Winslet told the Press Association.

"Jim and I have great respect for each other," she added. "There is no malice at all. It is extremely sad but we are all fine."

The announcement has rocked the show business world, where Winslet's marriage to Threapleton was regarded as the picture of domestic happiness.

But in an interview in the September issue of "InStyle" magazine, Winslet hinted that all was not well in her personal life.

"Having a baby has strengthened the relationship, although there are highs and lows and at times it's tough. I know we're very lucky," she said.

Shortly after the split was announced, the actress told reporters that the couple's 11-month old daughter Mia remained the priority for both of them.

"Jim and I are both communicating constantly. Mia remains the happy child that she has always been," she said, asking reporters to "respect our privacy."

'Love at first sight'

Winslet was catapulted to international stardom by her role as Rose in "Titanic," one of the most successful movies ever made.

Since then she has largely turned her back on Hollywood blockbusters to appear in a clutch of smaller films.

It was on the set of "Hideous Kinky" that the Winslet met assistant director Threapleton in 1997. They were engaged within months.

The actress spoke of her "love at first sight" for a "glorious-looking boy" when she first laid eyes on Threapleton.

The couple married in a low-key ceremony in Winslet's local church in Reading, southern England, in 1998, shunning lucrative offers from magazines for the rights to their wedding pictures.

Winslet often spoke of her determination to put her domestic happiness ahead of her career. Last year the couple bought a $1.17 million rural home in southern England in which to raise their baby daughter, born in October 2000.

The curvaceous actress was frequently praised for her outspoken comments on dieting. She hit the headlines last month after revealing she had shed four stone (25 kg) after a consultation with a "facial analyst" who examined her face for signs of nutritional deficiency.

Winslet will next be seen in the World War II spy thriller "Enigma."
