WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Michael Chertoff, who gained wide attention as the Republican chief counsel in the Senate's Whitewater hearings, was named Tuesday to head the Justice Department's Criminal Division. Chertoff's nomination to be assistant attorney general requires Senate confirmation. Chertoff served as U.S. Attorney in New Jersey from 1990 to 1994. A graduate of Harvard University and Harvard Law School, Chertoff is currently a partner with the law firm of Latham and Watkins in Newark, New Jersey. During more than a decade as a federal prosecutor in Newark and Manhattan, Chertoff pursued political corruption, health care fraud, bank fraud and savings-and-loan fraud.
