Matalin will serve as the incoming vice president's communications director. In a statement read by Fleischer, Cheney called Matalin "an individual of great experience and stature, who I will honored to have playing an important role on my staff."
Matalin has been a co-host of CNN's "Crossfire" talk show since July 1999. She came to prominence as a spokeswoman and deputy campaign manager for President George Bush's re-election effort in 1992. Before that, she worked for Bush's 1988 presidential campaign and as chief of staff to the Republican National Committee during the Bush administration.
Matalin is married to Democratic consultant and Clinton strategist James Carville. They co-wrote a book, " All's Fair: Love, War and Running for President."
Before joining CNN, she hosted talk shows on CBS radio and CNBC.
Also Friday, Cheney named Dean McGrath, currently chief of staff to Rep. Chris Cox, R-California, as his deputy chief of staff; and Juleanna Glover-Weiss, a Bush-Cheney campaign spokeswoman, as his press secretary.
