An Israel Defense Force official said troops returned fire when a drive-by shooter, traveling south to north, took shots at a patrol outside the gates of the Ksar Darom Israeli settlement.

The soldiers may have hit a vehicle traveling north to south on that road, the official said, but she was unable to confirm deaths or injuries pending an investigation.

Local media reported a Palestinian women was killed and four others in the car wounded.

The Israeli spokeswoman said an investigation would begin at first light, and Israeli Defense Force would express its deep condolences if innocent people were injured or killed.
