| Chile police raid German enclave in Pinochet probe
SANTIAGO, Chile (Reuters) -- A Chilean judge investigating Augusto Pinochet for alleged human rights abuses ordered police to storm a German enclave that may have been a torture centre during his 1973 to 1990 rule, the government said on Friday. Deputy Interior Minister Jorge Burgos said the raid, ordered by Judge Juan Guzman, is aimed at finding fugitive Paul Schaefer, wanted for several years on accusations of child abuse at the commune, formerly know as the Dignity Colony. Sworn testimony suggests some opponents of Pinochet's rule were taken to the enclave, 250 miles (400 km) south of Santiago, where they were tortured and killed. Schaefer is believed to have information about the alleged torture.
Police have unsuccessfully searched for Schaefer at the compound, which spans a broad swath of countryside and is believed to have underground tunnels, at various times over the past few years. A congressional committee concluded that police warned residents of the estate of the raids, giving suspects the chance to hide or escape. Judge Guzman plans to interrogate Pinochet, 84, on Oct. 9. Last month the Supreme Court stripped the retired general of his immunity from prosecution, a shield he held as an unelected senator for life. Copyright 2000 Reuters. All rights reserved.
