Band of rain connects both U.S. coasts

Satellite image of the United States, taken Saturday at 5:15 a.m. EDT

(AP) -- A ribbon of low pressure was slung across the northern tier of the United States this Labor Day, while rain splashed the mid-Atlantic coast and triple- digit temperatures continued in the South.

A strong cold front was expected to push south through the Ohio Valley and northern mid-Atlantic, triggering showers and thunderstorms into the Great Lakes and New England.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms were forecast to erupt strongly across the Carolinas, Deep South, Gulf Coast, Tennessee Valley and Florida.

A stalled frontal boundary over the northern and central Plains was expected to produce afternoon showers and thunderstorms from the Dakotas south to northern Oklahoma and Arkansas.

Low pressure over the West Coast was predicted to produce scattered showers and a few thunderstorms to the Pacific Northwest and Montana. Stronger storms could bring powerful wind gusts, hail and frequent lightning.

Upper level moisture over the southern Rockies was expected to produce isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms over Colorado, northern New Mexico, Pacific Northwest and northern Arizona.

Stronger storms were forecast to produce gusty winds, small hail and occasional lightning.

Highs Monday were forecast in the 60s and 70s across the Great Lakes, northern Ohio Valley, Upper Mississippi Valley, New England and Pacific Northwest; in the 80s and 90s along the southern Ohio Valley, central and southern Plains, mid-Atlantic, Georgia, northern Florida and Great Basin; and in the 100s over Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas, Desert Southwest and southern California.
