Hostage situation prompts Disney hotel evacuation
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Florida (CNN) -- A police SWAT team was dispatched to a hotel at Walt Disney World on Thursday after a guest informed the desk he was armed and holding a food service worker and a 4-year-old child hostage. The standoff was at the 378-room Boardwalk Inn directly across the street from Disney-MGM Studios. SWAT team members have been going door to door and removing guests near the room where the suspect is holed up, said Orange County Sheriff's Department spokesman Jim Solomons.
"He's indicated he's got a service worker hostage and holding a child and he claims to be armed," said Solomons. "We think this may have domestic roots." No shots had been fired, and Solomons said there's no way to know whether the man really is armed. Bill Warren, a Disney spokesman, said, "Everybody that's involved is in the same room and nobody else has been in there." Kim Sams, a Disney World spokesperson, said, "It's under control at the moment. No other guests or cast (employees) are in danger at this time." Warren said it was his understanding "it's domestic." Asked to elaborate, he said, "We're told it's somehow related to a dispute between the husband and wife." Reuters contributed to this report.
