Big Game jackpot reaches $220 million

May 4, 2000
Web posted at: 1:35 p.m. EDT (1735 GMT)

ATLANTA (CNN) -- The Georgia Lottery Corp. said Thursday that the jackpot for Friday's "Big Game" had grown to $220 million -- the second-largest prize in U.S. lottery history.

Rebecca Paul, head of the Georgia Lottery Corp., which administers the game, predicted the jackpot could grow even larger before the five winning numbers are chosen at Friday's 11 p.m. drawing.

No one matched all six numbers in Tuesday's drawing, which was worth $150 million.

Since then, the jackpot has grown because of record numbers of first-time players and players who are willing to cross state lines to buy lottery tickets, Paul said.

The Big Game jackpot is a record for the game. It is not expected to break the all-time record of $292 million set in July 1998 by the Powerball game.

The Big Game is played in Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey and Virginia.
