Elian's father: 'Soon I'll have my son with me'
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The following is an English translation of what Juan Miguel Gonzalez said in Spanish on Friday in a news conference outside the Justice Department, right after meeting with U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno to discuss taking custody of his son, 6-year-old Cuban boy Elian Gonzalez.
"Good morning. In the first place, I want to give thanks for the opportunity that Ms. Reno and Ms. Meissner (U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service Commissioner Doris Meissner) gave me to meet them and express to them my true feelings-- and what the position in the child's situation should be -- what is best for his happiness and his well-being.
"In this way I have been able to express to them the suffering that has been happening to my son Elian ... and the pressures that he's been subjected to during these four months ... who his true family is-- and where the child should be so he can re-make his life immediately.
"I've been very satisfied with the meeting with them. They've given me all their courage -- all their -- I don't know how to tell you-- all their support that this will be resolved as soon as possible.
"They have assured me, the state -- the government -- has assured me that that's how it's going to be. And I'm sure that it's going to be that way; that soon I'll have my son with me.
"I want to thank too the fishermen who saved my child and the North American (U.S.) people. The majority has been supporting the return of my son to me as quickly as possible ... and well, having him with me as soon as possible.
"Thank you very much."
