NASA to release report on what happened to Mars lander

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- NASA will release a long-awaited blue ribbon report Tuesday afternoon on what happened to the Mars Polar Lander.

The Polar Lander was lost December 3 as it attempted to land on the surface of the red planet.

There have been several preliminary explanations on what happened, but Tuesday's report by a team led by veteran aviation figure Tom Young is expected to be the final word on what doomed the $165 million spacecraft

The Lander's companion spacecraft, the Mars Climate Orbiter, was destroyed in September in a mixup over metric and English measurements..

The report was due for release at 2 p.m. EST.
