Gucci's spring/summer: The shape of things to come

MILAN, Italy (CNN) -- Forget the linear look of the '90s, Gucci designer Tom Ford says. These days, it's all about shape.

"I really wanted a curvy, voluptuous woman, but a modern version of Marilyn (Monroe)," he said. "This girl is, you know, very strong, very tough."

Part of this emphasis on shape for spring/summer 2001 can be found in Gucci's skirts, which are narrow through the hips. "But then some of them slightly poof out at the hem and twist and turn a little bit," he said.

Pants are pleated and full on top.

"It's all just a reversal of silhouettes, and a much curvier, sexier, strong feminine silhouette," he said.

Ford's must-have list for 2001 includes a corset bra, white, closed-toe shoes with high heels, and short, boyish hair.

"We have a stronger shoulder. We have a really fitted waist. We have a very accentuated chest," Ford said. "The bra is actually the accessory of the season. Every look has got a bra -- and those bras, they're not sort of subtle."

And what do you get?

"Put that sexy woman in a strong sort of man-tailored jacket with a boyish haircut, and you have what we're showing on the runway."

Ford's colors are black, white nude and khaki, paired with a bold violet and cobalt blue. From silks and satins to patent leather, shine takes on renewed interest. Skirt lengths are at the knee, even for evening wear.

Ford also places military touches throughout the collection, and he shows swimsuits with a difference. Some are made out of T-shirt material, cut into simple shapes.

"We also have swimsuits that almost look like corsets, which are very close to the body, very structured again," he said.

Ford translates curves into evening wear, with plenty of strapless dresses and skinny pants.

"Evening is very sculpted, very molded to the body," he said.

CNN Style Correspondent Elsa Klensch contributed to this report.
