Puffy faces lawsuit in nightclub shooting

NEW YORK -- A nightclub owner filed a $1.8 million lawsuit Wednesday against Sean "Puffy" Combs, saying business at his club deteriorated after Combs and three other men were involved in a shooting there last year.

Michael Bergos, owner of Club New York, alleges attendance at his club dropped and corporate clients cancelled events after the December 27, 1999, shooting. The club has suffered damages exceeding $600,000, says the lawsuit, filed in United States District Court.

"I'm just disgusted, basically," said Bergos, who said he wanted his reputation restored. "There were damages to the club, but the main thing is my name."

The shooting happened after a man insulted Combs and threw money in his face, say police. Combs' protege, Jamal "Shyne" Barrow, allegedly pulled a gun and opened fire, hitting three people. Barrow, 21, has been indicted on an attempted-murder charge.

Bergos' lawsuit also names as defendants Barrow, Combs' bodyguard, his driver and Bad Boy Entertainment, Combs' music production company.

Teen Web mogul inks television deal

HOLLYWOOD, California -- Ashley Power, the 15-year-old phenom behind the teen site Goosehead.com, is teaming up with MGM and Showtime to develop a television show, reports Variety magazine.

Power stars as Skye Warner in "Whatever," a short-film series featured on the Web site. She co-writes each six- to 12-minute short, called Webisodes, with her stepfather and director, Mark Schilders. Power would also star in the hour-long weekly television version that's under development.

Power initially launched Goosehead to entertain her friends, but she now has 30 employees. Earlier this year, actor Richard Dreyfuss signed on to produce two new shows for the site.

Recently, Power has been profiled in Vanity Fair magazine and The New York Times. She also has a book deal with Walt Disney Co.'s Hyperion Books to pen a first-person guide to life as a 'Net-savvy teen.

Former manager sues 98 Degrees

NEW YORK -- A management company Wednesday filed a $25 million lawsuit against boy band 98 Degrees, alleging the group failed to honor its contract after the company built the band into a hot international act.

Paris D'Jon, head of Top 40 Entertainment, met the four singers in October 1995 when they were unknowns, according to the suit filed in U.S. District Court. A month later, the band signed a contract with D'Jon. The company financed the band, arranging recording contracts, promotional tours and TV appearances, alleges the lawsuit.

In December 1999, the band terminated its contract, ignoring its requirement to honor the terms of the deal through October 2001, the suit says.

98 Degrees plans a countersuit against Top 40 Entertainment and D'Jon, said the band's lawyer, John J. Rosenberg. "The band's view is that they had more than ample grounds to terminate Mr. D'Jon and Top 40 as their manager," Rosenberg said.

Minnesota town honors Charles M. Schulz

ST. PAUL, Minnesota -- Snoopy will soon have more than just a frozen birdbath to skate on. The Ramsey County Board voted Tuesday to rename an ice arena after Charles M. Schulz, the late "Peanuts" cartoonist who grew up in St. Paul.

Park officials hope to put the new sign on the arena within a month. Officials also plan on redecorating the arena with cartoon characters.

Schulz, a hockey enthusiast, was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 1993.

Schulz died of colon cancer February 12 in Santa Rosa, California, just hours before his last original "Peanuts" strip was to appear in Sunday newspapers. He was 77.
