Elton sues accountants over 'missing' money

LONDON, England -- Flamboyant rock star Elton John is suing a top firm of accountants for £20 million ($29 million) over money he claims is missing from his business empire.

The case involves allegations against the accountancy firm PriceWaterhouseCoopers and Andrew Haydon, former managing director of John Reid Enterprises, which managed John's affairs.

The 53-year-old British singer and pianist brought the claim against the firm along with three of his companies -- W Bong Ltd, J Bondi Ltd and Happenspace Ltd.

John did not attend the start of his case at London's High Court last Thursday, but is due to be called as a witness during the hearing, expected to last up to eight weeks.

John's lawyer Gordon Pollock said the superstar had left administrative matters involving his business to others as he had an aversion to ''men in suits," such as lawyers and accountants, who badgered him about boring details.

John had "trusted them implicitly" and had paid them handsomely for their services, Pollock said. Elton had also sued John Reid but that case has already been settled, with the singer accepting a $5 million pay-out.

Reuters contributed to this report.
