Ontario officials: Will the Real Slim Shady please go home
TORONTO, Ontario -- Canadian officials say they're trying to find a way to prevent rap star Eminem, a Michigan native, from performing at the SkyDome in Toronto on Thursday night. Ontario Attorney General Jim Flaherty says he's reacting to complaints that Eminem's lyrics promote violence against women, and has put government lawyers and federal immigration officials on the case. But chances are real slim that they'll be able to keep out the rapper known as the Real Slim Shady, Flaherty says. Hate-crime legislation, he acknowledges, doesn't include violence against women. Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, often uses derogatory terms when referring to women in his music, and critics also say his songs are too violent. In "Kim," for example, he describes the final moments before killing his wife and dumping her body in the trunk of a car. He plans to go on with the show, despite the controversy. "Eminem's plan is to entertain his fans," says spokesman Dennis Dennehy, "and people who don't like it don't have to go."
