DJ Code wins world championship

graphic

LONDON, England (CNN) -- Scratch "scratchers." The politically correct term for a DJ these days is "turntablist."

Many of these disc jockeys have turned mixing music into a high-energy art form, as witnessed by the world DJ championships at Britain's Millennium Dome September 23-24.

As DJ Pogo notes: "I think if you're going to be a turntablist, you should be able to use the turntable to the fullest of its potential -- i.e., premixing, scratching, cutting, blending, all the forms of it, not just the scratching part."

DJ Code from France reigned supreme in the one-on-one DJ competition. Top honors for team battle went A-Track and Craze, a crew from the United States. The turntablists operated like a musical group, said Stig Mortensen, who judged the contest.

"In a team battle ... you've got one doing the drums, one doing the bass and one doing the piano," he said.

CNN WorldBeat Correspondent Gary Imlach has more on the winners among spinners.
