ITHACA, New York (CNN) -- If you've ever been to the zoo you know that elephants like to make loud noises. Scientists have now learned that elephants also make low sounds that humans can't hear. These low frequency noises, called infrasound, are similar to the noises whales make.

Despite the recent discovery, many mysteries remain about the way elephants communicate. One ambitious researcher wants to tap into elephant conversations by wiring an entire African forest with special microphones.

CNN correspondent Ann Kellan has the full story.
