Brazill allegedly showed weapon to friends before shootingMIAMI (CNN) -- Three days before the shooting Friday that left a teacher dead, 13-year-old suspect Nathaniel Brazill showed a handgun to friends, the Lake Worth Police Department said Monday, citing interviews with "two juveniles." In a statement, police said Brazill allegedly displayed the weapon near his home.
"The juveniles stated they did not tell their parents or any other person about the weapon," the statement said. Language-arts teacher Barry Grunow, 35, was shot at point-blank range in the face with a .25-caliber pistol the boy allegedly took last week from his grandfather's house. Police released 911 tapes about the shooting Monday. Lake Worth police have asked the FBI to analyze a home computer used by the teenager. Authorities said the suspect's mother voluntarily turned over the computer Sunday. "They'll recover the hard drive to see where he's been and what was on it," said Palm Beach County State Attorney's office spokesman Michael Edmundson. Police said they have recovered CD-ROM games and written materials including "printed web site pages, notebook pages and other written material which may indicate the suspect was interested in military service or law enforcement and related weaponry." The printed Web pages included "photos and information related to helicopters, firearms and accessories," the statement said. The boy's family issued the following statement Monday to the family of the victim, who is survived by a wife and two young children: "This is to express our sincere condolences at the time of your bereavement. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out especially to the wife and the children. We don't know only what we have been told but there is an Almighty God who sits high and looks low. He ...sees all and hears all. We are praying for you because ...God is in control. Sympathetically, the Brazill and Josey family." If tried as a juvenile, the honor-roll student who had perfect attendance could be confined until he reaches age 21. But Palm Beach County state attorney Barry Krischer said he will begin empaneling a grand jury Tuesday and will ask it to indict the boy as an adult for first-degree murder. Under state law, a grand jury is the sole body empowered to bring a charge of first-degree murder. Edmundson said Krischer could be ready to present evidence in the case as soon as Thursday, and that his presentation could take less than a day.
