| Earthquake shakes Australia's Cocos Islands
GOLDEN, Colorado (CNN) -- A 7.5-magnitude earthquake shook Australia's Cocos Islands on Sunday. The quake was centered 110 miles southeast of the islands and struck at 9:44 p.m. Sunday (10:44 a.m. EDT) said John Minsch, a geophysicist at the United States Geological Survey. The approximately 600 residents of the islands would be the only people likely to have been affected by the tremor, he said. The nearest populated area is Jakarta, Indonesia, 820 miles northeast of the epicenter. A tsunami was possible, Minsch said, "but we don't know." An earthquake with a 7.9 magnitude struck off the coast of Sumatra earlier this month without causing a tsunami, he said.
